The place gets its name from the historic Daga Trashiyangtse Dzong which was established in 1651 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the first man to unify Bhutan under a single central authority. Dagana Dzongkhag (district) is located in the southern part of the country. It covers an area of about 1389 kilometers, with the elevation ranging from 600 meters to 3800 meters above sea level. It has a total population estimate of about 25,070.
The district hares its border with Thimphu and Chhukha district to the west, Wangduephodrang district to the north, Tsirang district to the east and India to the south. The district falls within the Temperate zone in the north and the Sub-tropical zone in the south. Summers are hot and wet and winters dry and cold.
